Tasting Notes: Balrog Porter 21012

I can't say that there are many recipes that I've brewed that I am satisfied with. But this is actually one of the few recipes that I've brewed more than once, though I did modify it a bit to fit what ingredients I actually had at home. It would be really nice to have a couple of recipes to brew now and then and treat them as my house beers. Balrog Porter would sure be one of those recipes for me! It's only the second time that I brew this beer but I'm sure that I'll brew it more times.

It was about one month ago that this beer was bottled so the beer is still a bit young to really be up for judgement, but I couldn't restrain myself any longer. The beer pours pitch black with a slightly brownish head with very fine bubbles. The aroma is sweet with roasted tones which are backed up with small hints of licorice and some dark berry or dried fruit, maybe it is cherry that I get.

The beer is surprisingly light, just as the previous version of Balrog Porter. That is maybe what characterizes this beer, it's no heavy beer with tons of flavors but rather a thirst quencher! The roasted notes comes first in the aftertaste and before that, I get a round slightly fruity taste. Maybe a hint of rasins.
Sorry for the bad picture, the camera ran out of battery after the first picture.

I am pleased. This is a Balrog Porter! I was a bit worried that the many changes in the recipe would change the beer completely, but it didn't. I can proudly state that Balrog Porter qualifies as my first house beer! The only thing I am a bit disappointed with in this years Balrog Porter is that the head was not that stable or beautiful, but I think that will fix with a bit of aging. It usually does.

As a side not I can also mention that I did taste the Vienna Hybrid but it did not feel ready to drink at all yet so I didn't post any tasting notes on it.
